MS2395 Designing, Deploying, and Managing a Network Solution for the Small- and Medium-sized Business

Course Summary

The goal of this three-day course is to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to select, deploy, and manage a Microsoft networking solution for small and medium-sized businesses.

Candidates for this course are IT professionals who work for and with small- and medium-sized businesses. These professionals include product resellers; service providers; in-house technology experts; self-employed business proprietors who design, deploy, and manage their own network solutions; and owners or employees of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and system builders.

Before attending this course, students must have a working knowledge of:

  • Sharing folders
  • Stopping and starting services
  • Working with the Microsoft Management Console (MMC)
  • Creating and managing user accounts
  • Assigning permissions
  • The purpose and some of the implementations of Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) services such as Domain Name System (DNS) and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DCHP) (although students will not need to know how to implement these services in a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 environment)
  • Working knowledge of Active Directory® directory service
  • Working knowledge of Group Policy Objects (GPOs)
  • In addition, students should have these certifications: A+, Net+

Course Outline

Module 1: Designing a Business Network Solution
This module describes the requirements for designing a network solution for a small or medium-sized business.

Module 2: Installing and Upgrading to Windows Small Business Server 2003
This module provides you with the knowledge and skills necessary to install and upgrade to Windows Small Business Server 2003.

Module 3: Configuring Small Business Server 2003 by Completing the To-Do List
This module explains how to perform the tasks on the To-Do List to complete Windows Small Business Server 2003 Setup.

Module 4: Managing Messaging and Collaboration in Small Business Server 2003
This module discusses how to access internal and external e-mail messages. This module also discusses how to collaborate with other users by using Microsoft Windows SharePoint™ Services.

Module 5: Managing and Monitoring Windows Small Business Server 2003
This module discusses how to manage, monitor, and troubleshoot a Windows Small Business Server network.

Module 6: Installing or Upgrading to Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition
This module explains the procedures for installing Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition, completing the installation process by performing initial configuration tasks, and upgrading from Microsoft Windows 2000 to Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition.

Module 7: Configuring Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition
This module discusses how Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition, provides options that you can use to customize the Windows 2003 environment and ensure that the server operates correctly. Understanding the available options and how to configure them will help you configure a Windows Server 2003 environment that meets the requirements of your organization.

Module 8: Securing a Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition Network
This module explains how to secure Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition, by configuring and securing the server for Internet access; securing file, folder, and printer objects; and helping secure the server from viruses.

Module 9: Managing Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition
This module explains how to manage Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition, by delegating administration, managing user environments with GPOs, monitoring server and client computer performance, performing management tasks from a remote location, protecting against data loss, and identifying troubleshooting tools that can assist you in resolving potential problems.
